Professor Fernando Ribiero
Originally from Brazil I immigrated to New Zealand in 2017.
Since arriving I have taught myself english, started TopMax my Painting and Decorating business and also dedicated myself to creating a gym and community around my passion of Jiu Jitsu.
I got my first Black Belt in 2001 whilst practising Judo, and after a short break I soon found and fell in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Since then I have dedicated myself to Jiu Jitsu, I competed in multiple Championship competitions around the world and achieved my BJJ Black Belt under Roney da Silva, in 2019.
I am committed to doing good within the community and want to help give people of all abilities and backgrounds the opportunity to experience Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian jiu-jitsu was first developed in 1925 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., O’Brien, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was taught a hybrid of traditional Japanese Jujitsu and Kodokan judo by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, in 1917. Later on, the Gracie family developed their own self-defense system Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
BJJ eventually came to be its own defined combat sport through the innovations, practices, and adaptation of Gracie jiu-jitsu and judo, and became an essential martial art for modern MMA.
